As part of our ‘My Hyper-Local Choice’ series, we delve into the stories of those who passionately favor a single menu item. Today, we explore Mr. Tomoya Okada’s unwavering love for ‘carbonara at Little John,’ a restaurant situated 40 minutes south of Nagoya. It’s the ultimate local recommendation for what to eat in Nagoya!

I no longer look at the menu.

Little John

– Hi there, Tomoya Okada! I heard that you’re a big fan of the carbonara at Little John in Urasato. What makes it so special?

Oh man, where do I even begin? It’s just unlike any other carbonara I’ve ever had. It’s got tomatoes and green peppers in it, and the black pepper really gives it this incredible flavor. It’s one of those dishes that just surprises you in the best way possible. From the very first bite, you’ll know why carbonara is a must-choice dish on their menu.

– That sounds amazing! So, you always order the carbonara when you go there, right?

Yeah, pretty much. I mean, I’ve tried a few other things on the menu before, but once I discovered the carbonara, I was hooked. It’s my go-to order now, without a doubt.

Look at his reaction! No matter how many times he has had it, it never fails to hit the spot! Seriously, even coming all the way from Chikusa Ward is totally worth it for this dish!

– Wow, it must be really good! But I heard that the restaurant can get pretty crowded. Is that true?

Oh yeah, it definitely can. That’s why I always make a reservation ahead of time. Otherwise, you might end up waiting in line for a while. And trust me, it’s worth making the reservation just for that carbonara!

– I’ll have to remember that if I ever go there. And you mentioned something about ordering the ML size of carbonara?

Yeah, that’s right. ML is a size that’s in between medium and large, and it’s perfect for me. Little John defaults to the medium size, but if you want a little bit more, I definitely recommend going with ML. Just be warned – it’s a pretty big portion, so make sure you’re up for it! Don’t go for L size unless you’re super hungry! Haha.

While M is the default size, people find that MS is usually enough to leave them feeling satisfied and full!

– Haha, got it. And is there a certain way you like to eat the carbonara?

Oh, absolutely. I love to sprinkle a ton of grated cheese on top and just savor every bite. And actually, the restaurant has these lids on the dishes, but I always take them off right away. The carbonara just looks and tastes so much better that way.

Tomoya’s approach is to eat the dish right away, without letting the grated cheese settle or melt too much, in order to enjoy it at its best.

“Oh man, the struggle is real, I mean, there’s only half left…what am I supposed to do with myself?”

– It sounds like you’re a real connoisseur of this carbonara! Do you ever find yourself craving it?

Oh, all the time. It’s honestly a problem at this point – I’ll be in the middle of eating it and already thinking about when I can come back for more. But that’s just how good it is!

– I can definitely tell that you’re a huge fan. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with us today, Tomoya. It was great to hear your perspective on this amazing dish!

My pleasure! I can’t wait until that day! I’m already thinking about the next time I come, lol.
