Sicilian Excellence: The Best Spaghetti in Nagoya – A Local Obsession and Potential Nagoya Food Specialty

Hyperlocal Nagoya’s third rendezvous with Sicilian – and trust me, when it comes to Nagoya food, Sicilian is THE name. It’s so Nagoya-style spaghetti that we might as well introduce it to Italy and get it certified as an official Nagoya delicacy – Nagoya meshi! So, there’s local Nagoyan Sasada-san, recently addicted to Sicilian, and I, embarking on a lunch!

Addicted to Sicilian Spaghetti: Flavorful Temptation!

Originally, our plan was to enjoy some ramen, but our taste buds had other ideas – they were yearning for Sicilian spaghetti, a true Nagoya food sensation. So, we quickly changed course and headed to Showa-ku in search of this delectable dish.

During lunchtime, you’ve got to brace yourself for a bit of a lineup, mainly consisting of salarymen and loyal customers who fill up the place.

You can’t come here every day. You really want to, though! But that’s not quite feasible. So, Sasada-san and I decided to be efficient diners and ordered three different flavors. Efficient for us, and a win-win for the restaurant!

This time, we ordered the classic Peperoncino, a Tomato-based spaghetti, and Tarako (cod roe) spaghetti. By the way, the Peperoncino comes with a topping of spinach and bacon!

Peperoncino is Sicilian’s flagship and the number one crowd-pleaser. Its simplicity is what makes it challenging to perfect. It’s packed with Japanese umami, and you get that delightful sizzle from frying it in a pan. After Sasada took a bite, he spontaneously declared, ‘This is the taste of Nagoya!’ It’s a spaghetti that oozes such mouthwatering, intense flavors.

The Tomato spaghetti, as usual, offers deep, rich, and addictive flavors. When you dip the toast they provide into it, it becomes irresistible.

And then, there’s the Tarako spaghetti. It’s not your typical white sauce-based dish; it’s robust and intense, with tarako meticulously sautéed and mixed in. It’s the kind of spaghetti that you’d want as a perfect rice companion.

This deliciousness is eternal!

While eating, you can’t help but mumble ‘It’s delicious!’ over and over. Seriously, we’re talking about a level of ‘delicious’ that echoes throughout the entire restaurant. You can’t help but blurt it out as naturally as a soliloquy.

We’ll say it again, as you eat, you start contemplating, ‘What should we have next?’ and even think about who to bring along for your next visit. The withdrawal is real; you just don’t want the Sicilian spaghetti experience to end.

So, what’s on the menu for next time? Already, we find ourselves immersed in the aftertaste of Sicilian’s deliciousness, pondering the possibilities!
