Head south from Kanayama towards Tenma-cho, and you’ll stumble upon the quaint, slightly tattered-looking Chinese restaurant, “Rian. (李苑)” At first glance, you might think it’s closed due to its worn-out awning and general shabby appearance. But don’t be fooled! This is a living legend of Showa-era nostalgia, a true Shabby Local Town Chinese Restaurant of Nagoya, proudly run by an elderly owner for over 40 years.
This Shabby Tent! Full of Flavor!
Describing it as Showa retro, nostalgic, or ancient doesn’t quite capture its essence. This place epitomizes the theory that the more rundown a place looks, the better the food tastes!
Step inside, and you’ll find an interior that’s as aged and authentic as the exterior. The charm of the place isn’t just in its ambiance but also in the incredibly cheap menu, both for set meals and single items.
I decided to order the miso ramen and fried rice set. The miso ramen, though simple, had a rich broth that paired perfectly with the noodles, and the fried rice was aromatic and delicious, making for a highly satisfying meal. Despite the deep atmosphere, the restaurant offers cheap and tasty dishes, and the friendly owner’s hospitality makes it an easy spot for first-timers.
Sure, the exterior and interior might look a bit daunting, but once you’re inside, there’s a comforting blend of nostalgia and reassurance.
