When you hear about Tsurumai in Nagoya, you might think of its convenient transportation options, with both JR and subway lines, and its proximity to the city center. But, unless you live or work in the area, it’s one of those places you might not have much reason to visit—a genuinely local spot. However, nestled within the residential streets, you’ll find a variety of delightful and unassuming eateries, perfect for a casual lunch. “GIGI” happens to be a standout among these, a favorite among locals and those working nearby. So, we decided to drop by for lunch.

The Unapologetically Local and Down-to-Earth Italian
Meet the quiet restaurant owner. He’s not the most talkative guy, with a soft voice and not particularly charming, but his ability to single-handedly run the place is nothing short of impressive! Before you know it, it’s past 11:30, and the restaurant is packed, including reservations.
Four salarymen arrive, hoping for lunch, but the owner politely gestures, “Not possible right now,” while making a batting gesture with his finger. He doesn’t even suggest they wait. There’s a certain allure in his lack of business-oriented demeanor. You might feel a tad sorry for the salarymen, but there’s an oddly comforting, laid-back vibe, as if you’ve just dropped by someone’s home.
At GIGI, you can enjoy classic Italian dishes that are casual, affordable, and easy on the wallet. The pasta lunch, which includes salad, bread, and a drink, is a steal at 1,100 yen. For the pasta lunch, you can choose from three options. On the day of our visit, we ordered the tarako pasta and the creamy oyster spaghetti. They also offer set course lunches if you’re feeling fancy.
The clientele is a diverse mix, from couples enjoying a leisurely lunch to solo diners doing their thing.
If you want to order a post-meal drink, it’s best to pick a moment when the chef isn’t too busy, as he’s running the show solo. It’s a system where you extend the courtesy, and it works like a charm. No worries; it’s all part of the experience.
